Dear Nantucket Community,

Sadly, there was another mass shooting in the United States, this time the violence was perpetrated against the LGBTQI+ community.

On Saturday, November 19, 2022, patrons at Club Q in Colorado Springs were fatally wounded or injured. The nightclub has been described as a safe haven for the LGBTQI+ community and Club Q described the incident as a hate crime. Though there are many questions, we acknowledge that many lives and families are forever changed.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis described the incident as “horrific, sickening, and devastating.” In a statement, President Joseph Biden emphasized, “Places that are supposed to be safe spaces of acceptance and celebration should never be turned into places of terror and violence… We must drive out the inequities that contribute to violence against LGBTQI+ people. We cannot and must not tolerate hate.”

The Town of Nantucket stands in solidarity with the people of Colorado Springs and with the LGBTQI+ community in the United States and around the world, including survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting in June 2016. Nantucket’s town government rejects hate and intolerance on and off our shores. Our community firmly believes in equality for all.

Town leadership and the DEI Office are working to move beyond solidarity by taking actions to demonstrate our support for all demographics including the LGBTQI+ community. Specifically, prior to this tragedy, there have been conversations on the necessity and benefits of establishing a Human Rights Commission or a LGBTQI+ advisory board to assist the community in our efforts to be a more inclusive island. With your support, the DEI Office commits to speak out against discrimination and violence.

Together, we strive to ensure that Nantucket is a community where all people belong.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kimal McCarthy
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Director
