Update: MassDEP/UMass Private Well Sampling Program for PFAS

Free Well Water Testing

The Town of Nantucket has received information that MassDEP/UMass is interested in collecting well water samples, for free testing of PFAS compounds, in the next few weeks.

This program is helping MassDEP characterize this emerging contaminant in private wells and to protect public health in the Commonwealth. There are more than 100 residents that have signed up with MassDEP/UMass and submitted an online application.  A high-level of interest has been received for sampling drinking wells located west of Long Pond and immediately west of the Airport.  Selected homeowners in these areas will be contacted by UMass for sampling.

Additionally, UMass has asked that we help increase the participation in this program to represent a more complete distribution drinking water wells across the island.  Therefore, if you are a homeowner in other parts of the island, please consider submitting an application to participate in this free program.  More information is available at the following links:

A last minute submissions is ok, and those received by July 26th are greatly appreciated. MassDEP intends to collect a total of 40 samples island-wide and plans to have sampling completed in August.  For questions, please contact MassDEP’s Drinking Water Program at program.director-dwp@mass.gov
