As the elder population continues to grow on Cape Cod and the Islands, crimes against elders will continue to increase in numbers and complexity. The Nantucket Police remains committed to providing the best well trained officers to respond to the special needs of the elder population and to ensure equal access to the criminal justice system, focusing on the investigation and prosecution of crimes committed against persons who are sixty years of age or older including, but not limited to:
- Physical Abuse
- Emotional Abuse
- Sexual Abuse
- Financial Exploitation
- Caregiver Neglect
- Self-Neglect
Functions:
The fundamental duties are to develop, implement, coordinate, and expand effective crime prevention, education, and service programs for senior citizens. Activities revolve around both preventive and victim assistance aspects.
A successful unit requires collaboration with the Fire Prevention Officer, Elder Service of Nantucket and Counsel on Aging.
The Officer assigned to the Elder Service function shall:
- Evaluate the needs of senior citizens through public opinion and community surveys;
- Arrange and coordinate speaking engagements at senior centers, housing units and clubs;
- Act as liaison officer between the department and members of the senior community;
- Work collaboratively with senior citizen community organizations and elder professional agencies;
- Develop and submit crime prevention information for senior newsletter;
- Follow up interdepartmental and intra agency reports.
